Main Activities
- The Marine Environmental Protection Centre has undertaken clean-up operations and restoration in response to several oil spills that occurred in the territorial waters of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
For example, it dealt with oil spills by the trade ship Highsea which was sunk in the waters off Jasan-ri, Thongchon County, Kangwon Province at 03:00 on December 9, 2011.
  
It also disposed of oil that was spilled due to the collision between the trade ships Chriton 3 and Hunggyong in the Taedong River at 15:04, February 14, 2012.
  
It cleared away oil pollution caused by the trade ship Jopol 2 which was aground on the shore around Pongam-ri, Ranam District, Chongjin, North Hamgyong Province at about 18:30 on November 11, 2012.
  
It cleared the sea of oil spilled by the collision between the trade ships Xingfuda and Ounchongnyon in anchorage off Songnim Port in Songnim City, North Hwanghae Province on May 18, 2013.
  
-It has worked out training plans according to the National Oil Pollution Emergency Plan and conducted activities to implement them.
 
- It has branches on the east and west coasts to promptly respond to oil spill by ships and works to lay human, material and technical foundations for clean-up operations and restoration.
-It has set up a department of analysis into the effect of the quality of ship oil on marine environment, and promoted relevant preparations and development of analysis equipment.
  
- It evaluates, observes and measures the effect of ships on marine environment and researches and develops the means and methods of pollution prevention and removal. It analyses and evaluates substances used and discharged by the ships, which enter the waters and ports of the country, at the request of the Maritime Administration.
- In addition, it works out action plans to dispose of sewage, other wastes, ballast and other pollutants discharged from ships, and conducts research and development to this end. |
