Ri Jing, a representative artist of Korean painting, and his paintings
Ri Jing was a representative gold painting artist of the feudal Joson dynasty.
He liked painting from childhood and an amusing anecdote is told of him.
One day, young Ri Jing went up to an attic and focused on painting, forgetting his meals for days. His parents looked for him everywhere and could find him after three days. His father got so angry to lash his son on the calf. But Ri Jing drew a bird with tears, which surprised the people around.
He studied painting hard and became a famous painter. He created conspicuous works of blue-green landscape painting and yellow-blue landscape painting, and he was well versed in gold paintings.
He developed traditional Korean painting of gold painting style. Especially breaking the previous gold painting style which was limited to the Buddhist paintings and landscape, he expanded it to the paintings of flowers and animals, and thereby enriched the painting styles of the contemporary painting circles.
His representative gold paintings are Eagle, Landscape, Deer, Tortoise, and the like.
Landscape is one of his typical paintings which shows his artistic talent.
In the painting, high and low mountain peaks is towering into clouds and clear water is flowing through the rocky valleys of the hills which are thickly wooded. A man is sitting on the rock, not willing to stand up, as if he is thrown over the ecstasy of the clouded mountains or he forgot himself by the silvery sound of water flow. People behind him are also standing still, not willing to break his meditation.
Nature and persons are put together to create an emotional scene which is well composed with a delicate touch of the brush. The color effect of light or deep gold painting onto the black background is distinctive and even creates a mystic atmosphere.
Although he did not reflect the reality of the contemporary society, Ri Jing drew a number of excellent yellow and blue landscape paintings and gold paintings. Thus, he remains an excellent artist of our nation who contributed to the development of the painting art of the times.
