An Kyon, a representative artist of Korean painting and his paintings
An Kyon was one of the representative artists of Korea in the mid-15th century and was especially famous for his landscape paintings. He also painted numbers of portraits, imaginary pictures and the Four Gracious Plants.
He studied famous paintings of home and abroad and grasped the essential points. He adopted the good points and created his unique style of painting. His paintings realistically reflected the scenic beauty of the nature and were very popular among the contemporary painters. He made a great contribution to the development of the paintings of our country.
In his paintings, some imaginary landscapes can be found but do not degrade the quality of the paintings as he reflected so well the magnificent and beautiful nature.
His representative works are Green Mountains and White Clouds, Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land, Jokbyokdo, Dragon, Fisherman and the like. Also, his paintings of the scenery and customs of four seasons are well-known.
Dream Journey to the Peach Blossom Land is the most famous landscape painting of An Kyon. He painted the imaginary landscape of the peach blossom land which Ri Yong, the prince of the feudal Joson dynasty, saw in his dream. It is said that An Kyon completed the picture in three days imagining the landscape of the peach blossom land. He painted the imaginary world of the mountain excellently with elegant strokes, adequate use of shade and light and detailed delicate drawing.
The paintings of An Kyon are still considered as a precious cultural heritage until today as they are rich in emotion and reflect the object truthfully with beautiful strokes.
