Sohyon School

Sohyon School was originally a building where Ri I (1536-1584), a Confucian scholar of the middle period of the feudal Joson dynasty, taught his pupils and wrote books. It was rebuilt as a school afterwards.

Sohyon School is situated in the fifth valley Unbyong which is the most beautiful scenic spot of Soktam Kugok where the crystal water of the Soktam Stream flows around the nine valleys (Kugok) and form a stone lake (Soktam) and it is famous for its superb scenic beauty.

The inside of the square fence is divided into the front and rear area. In the front area there is a lecture hall and in the rear area there is a shrine. In the front part of the outside the fence, there are Chonggye Hall in the west and Yogum Pavilion in the east and other several buildings.

Chonggye Hall, where Ri I first taught his students, was built in 1575 and Unbyong schoolhouse, which was a lecture hall, was built in 1578. After Ri I died, a shrine for holding memorial services for him and other famous Confucian scholars was built.

At the same time, Sammun (three gates) and several other attached buildings were built. It could then be called as a private school and it was named as Soktam School. In 1616, it was renamed by the king as Sohyon School.

Unbyong schoolhouse is a single eaves gabled house and it has 4 kans (9.95m) in the front side and 3 kans (6.5m) in the lateral side. It was built on the embankment which is piled up with stones and it is about 1 meter high.

The shrine is a double eaves gabled house which was built on the place higher than the hall and it has 3 kans (7.63m) in the front side and 3 kans (5.82m) in the lateral side. In front of the shrine, there is Chonjo House, a house for a monument which is carved with the letters written by a noted calligrapher Kim Jong Hui.

It is told that Ok San, who was the younger sister of Ri I, a noted calligrapher and Komungo (Korean lute) player, used to play Komungo for her brother in Yogum Pavilion. The pavilion is a square one-kan building where the length of the side is 3 meters.

Chonggye Hall is a single eaves gabled house which has 4 kans (9.95m) and 3 kans (6.5m) in the lateral side. The size and structure of the hall is almost same with the lecture hall.

On the opposite side of Chonggye Hall, there is a family shrine consisting of several buildings such as the house where Ri I stayed.

Sohyon School is a representative school of our country along with the Ojuk House, Tosan Shrine and Academy and Sungyang Confucian Shrine and Academy. It is an important historic site that shows the appearance of local private teaching utility and architectural technology of the feudal Joson dynasty.
