Popular traditional liquor Riganggo
Riganggo is one of the three old major traditional liquors in Korea.
In the old records as Tongguksesigi and Kyongdojapji (Capital magazine), Riganggo of Hwanghae Province is recorded as one of the three old major liquors with Kamhongro of Pyongyang and Jukryokgo of Jolla Province. Even in the old records like Jungbosallimgyongje there are data associated with Riganggo.
Riganggo is an excellent liquor cultural heritage of our nation which is made with well-known Pongsan and Haeju pears of Hwanghae Province and ginger mixed with liquor in a peculiar way.
The letter "ri(梨)" in "Riganggo(梨薑膏)" means the pear, "gang(薑)" means the ginger and "go(膏)" means the oil along with the meaning of liquor of high quality.
It is traditionally brewed with Korean malt which is pure liquor with the colour of pale yellow harmonized with peculiar flavour, sweet and fragrant flavour of pear and attractive and sweet flavour of ginger. It is well-known as it suits everyone's taste and have a good look and is good for health.
Taebaksan Traditional Goods Manufactory developed traditional brewing method of Riganggo and its method was registered as Local Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2016 and on May 9, 2018 it was registered as National Intangible Cultural Heritage. They set up traditional manufacturing process and conducted sale.
Riganggo is widely sold in public catering and commercial establishments in Pyongyang like Pyongyang Department Store No. 1, Pyongyang Station Department Store and Kwangbok Area Supermarket. People's demands become greater as it has peculiar flavour pleasant to Korean people's taste and instills pride and dignity of Korean nation's traditional liquor culture.
