National and Local Intangible Cultural Heritages registered last year
Last year, “Custom of the 24 divisions of the year”, “Tug of war”, “Rope skipping”, “Hide-and-seek” were registered as the National Intangible Cultural Heritage and “Taedong river mullet soup”, “Beauty of Hoeryong white apricot” were registered as the Local Intangible Cultural Heritage in DPR Korea. These customs reflect perpetuity, good qualities and peculiar social conditions of Korean nation.
The custom of the 24 divisions of the year is a custom of working life. Our people divided the year into 24 subdivisions and set standard points like Ripchun, Usu, Kyongchip that show climatic change. They did farming, performed several ceremonies, made seasonal dishes and played various folk games according to these subdivisions. This custom reflects perpetuity and profound astronomical knowledge of the Korean nation.
Tug of war is a national sport in which players are divided into two teams, hold the rope on the both side and compete which team pulls the rope to their side more.
Rope skipping is a folk game handed down from generation to generation in which children skip the rope by various methods. The rope may be fixed or twirled by children.
Hide-and-seek is a children’s folk game which has a long history. In this game, a child selected as a Pom (tagger) has to find out the children who are hiding.
Taedong river mullet soup is a traditional dish unique to Pyongyang area. This soup is cooked by putting mullet in cold water with pepper corns.
Beauty of Hoeryong white apricot is a social custom of planting, growing and using Hoeryong white apricots in northern areas of Korea which was formed from the ancient times.
All these customs have a great significance in arousing ardent love for their native land, national emotion and sentiment among people.
