Reconstruction of the Taehung Temple started
National Heritage Conservation and Management Station of Kaesong City have started the reconstruction of the Taehung Temple which is situated in Pakyon-ri, Kaesong.
Pakyon-ri, Kaesong, is a famous scenic spot which has a number of time-honored historic sites like Pakyon Falls (one of the three famous falls of Korea), Fort on Mt. Taehung, the Kwanum Temple and the Taehung Temple.
Taehung Temple is situated in Taehung valley inside the Fort on Mt. Taehung which was built to join the steep mountain peaks of Mt. Chonma and Mt. Songgo during the Koryo period.
The Taehung Temple was first built in 920, at the early period of Koryo, and at present the old site of the Taehung Temple and Wondang (primary hall) building are present.
Wondang building consists of Sammun (3 gates), Buddhist sanctum, East Building, West Building and a stone fence.
The area inside the stone fence surrounding Sammun, Buddhist sanctum, East Building and West Building is 438.92㎡.
From August 2010 to October 2011, the old site of the Taehung Temple was excavated generally.
As a result, 3 cultural layers of the period of Koryo and the feudal Joson dynasty were confirmed, and the process of change of the Taehung Temple site was known and the base data for the reconstruction of the Taehung Temple was prepared.
The Taehung Temple site was registered as DPR Korea Preservation Site No. 529.
Based on the excavation result of the cultural layers of Koryo period, the site of the Taehung Temple has been reconstructed since March Juche 108 (2019).
Reconstruction objects are 4 buildings; Taeung Hall, Taesung Shrine, Myongui Shrine and Wanwol Pavilion of the second cultural layer which were built in the late Koryo period. The total area of the building site is 2 000 ㎡ and the building area is 340.89㎡.
