Chilsong Gate

Chilsong Gate was built during the period of Koguryo dynasty in the mid-6th century as the northern gate to the Inner Wall of the Walled City of Pyongyang. The present-day gate pavilion was rebuilt in the 18th century.

The gate was a strong point favourable for defence but very hard to attack.

It is an important historical relic bearing testimony to the Koguryo’s developed architecture of wall gates. The gate was built between the spaces of two parallel walls in order to enhance defence power.

The pavilion of the gate measures three bays (7.38m) on the front and two bays (4.36m) at the sides. The bay of the central space is extended giving emphasis to the centre. It has a simple single-eave hip-saddle roof which matches well in contour and profile.

The Chilsong Gate is designated as national treasure and is integrated into national conservation and management plans.
