Specialty of Tokchon

From the primitive ages, the Korean ancestors began to put on clothes by weaving hemp cloth with ancient spinning-wheels. Through their continued creative activities they produced silk, cotton, ramie and other various materials to make clothes for winter, summer and other seasons.

Silk gauze is one of silk fabrics that the Korean women have long since used in making summer chima (skirt) and jacket. The cloth weaved finely with silk or ramie threads looks refreshing. It is soft to the touch and has sober and delicate colours. So, it was a cloth favoured by the Korean women as it met their sentiments and tastes.

As regards silk gauze, the Tokchon area has been famous for its production in the country.

At the end of September in 1968, Chairman Kim Jong Il visited the Tokchon Textile Mill. While looking at its sample products one by one, he touched silk gauze and said with satisfaction: Women would be happy as the quality of silk gauze has improved markedly as against before. People ranked silk gauze first out of specialties of Tokchon. It would be good for the textile mill to keep producing it in large quantities so as to make jackets and stage costumes for women and dancing costumes for kindergarteners and schoolchildren.

Thanks to his meticulous guidance and loving care, silk gauze is now widely used in the life of the Korean people.
