Built in 935, the temple was famous as one of the ten major temples in the period of Koryo, but it was dilapidated in the period of the feudal Joson dynasty.
As one of the relatively large stone lanterns left in Korea, it is 3.72 metres high.
Each side of the square pedestal is 1.92 m wide, and its upper surface is engraved with upside-down lotus patterns.
The lantern, which looks simple yet majestic, is part of the important cultural heritage which shows the stone architecture in the early days of Koryo.
At present, it is preserved within the premise of the Koryo Museum.
