Korean Acrobatics Developed from Ancient Times

In Korea acrobatics developed from ancient times.

It is proved by a bronze trinket which was unearthed in Dolmen No.1 in Jang-ri, Sangwon Country, North Hwanghae Province.

It depicts two acrobats maintaining balance shoulder to shoulder on two wheels with a round ring in one hand and performing stunts.

Acrobatics were further developed by the Koguryo people with optimistic, delightful, and humorous characters.

The scenes of stunts painted in the murals of Phalchong-ri tomb, Tokhung-ri tomb and Mausoleum of King Kogugwon prove that.

Acrobatics, which made big progress in the period of Koguryo dynasty, reached a high level of development in the period of Palhae and Koryo.

In those years clowns performed acrobatic stunts in the masked dramas at the ceremony of welcoming the visiting foreign envoys to the capital and local towns.

Their vigorous art activities brought about further development of acrobatics in the mid-17th and19th century.

They created somersault, rope walking, performing feats on the pole, balancing on a large ball, equestrian skills, jugglery, farcical play and others, thus developing various kinds and forms of acrobatics.

Today the acrobatics of the DPRK with a long history are winning great admiration across the world.
