Peculiar Korean-style Roofs
The Korean-style tiled roofs existed from the period of Ancient Joson, the first state in Korea.
It can be proved through the mural paintings from the period of Koguryo, and the patterns carved on structures and bricks from the period of Three Kingdoms.
According to shapes, the roofs are divided into gable roof, hipped roof, hip-saddle roof, broach roof, special roof, etc.
They are characterized by the curved lines of eaves of the lifted angle rafters by the extended eaves and pillars, as well as the lines of eaves curved inside. As the two curved lines are harmoniously combined with each other, the roofs as a whole look cheerful for the uplifted four corners of the eaves.
The Korean ancestors used roof styles with two curved lines from the period of Koguryo, whereas its neighbouring country used straight roof styles even in the fifth and sixth centuries.
Besides, four- or double-sided steep or flat roof styles applied in the countries of Southeast Asia, Central Asia and Europe varied from those of Koguryo.
The peculiar and beautiful roof styles of the Korean nation give a glimpse of their ennobling aesthetic sentiments and resourceful talents.
