Yaksandongdae

Yaksandongdae, a scenic mountain in the central part of Nyongbyon County, North Phyongan Province, soars on the shore of Kuryong River which is 2 km west of its town.

It was regarded as one of the Eight Scenic Spots in Kwanso areas for its beautiful scenery and good prospects, especially the azaleas dyeing the whole mountain pale pink in spring, thick green foliage in summer, red maples in autumn and peculiar snowscape in winter.

Literally, yaksan means a mountain with abundant medicinal herbs and mineral water, and dongdae refers to an east pavilion seen from Muju when Nyongbyon was divided into Muju, Yongju and Wiju in the past.

The finest sceneries of Yaksandongdae are Jeil Peak, Tongdae, Hakbyo Cliff and others.

Jeil Peak, the highest peak of the mountain, serves as a good belvedere.

On the top of the peak, Kuryong River skirting Yaksandongdae and Chongchon and Taeryong rivers flowing gently into the West Sea of Korea can be seen, while the magnificent figure of Mt. Ryongmun, another scenic attraction in the province far to the east, comes into sight.

Under the feet, one can command a view of Nyongbyon Town encircled by an old castle, and a picturesque view of rich fields of Anju and Pakchon areas to the southwest.
