Spoon and fork

In June Juche 70 (1981), Chairman Kim Jong Il visited a hotel in Mt. Kumgang to be soon completed.

On the second floor, he stared at a signboard on the door of the restaurant for a while. A fork and a knife were drawn on it indicating a restaurant for foreigners.

Standing there for a while without a word, he instructed to draw a spoon and chopsticks of our country on the signboard.

After the Chairman’s visit, a Korean spoon and chopsticks replaced the fork and knife on the signboard at the entrance to the restaurant.

In fact, spoons and chopsticks are eating utensils that our people have used in the dietary life since olden times.

The archaeological excavation at Sophohang Site and Chodo Site in Rason City that discovered bone spoons dating back to the primitive and ancient times clearly proves that our ancestors have made spoons and chopsticks to use in dietary life since early days.

In all ages, our people regard it as a native practice to use spoons for rice and soup, and chopsticks for side dishes.

Like this, the Chairman saw to it that a symbolic design for restaurant was made in our own style in order to inherit and encourage the excellent folk traditions of our people.
