National Beverage Sujonggwa

Sujonggwa (fruit punch) is one of the unique national beverages enjoyed by our people from olden times.

Sujonggwa is a drink in which dried persimmons are put into the water infused with ginger and cinnamon in.

First, water is poured into a pot and boiled with thoroughly cleaned ginger and cinnamon. When the fragrance of ginger and cinnamon is soaked out, they are removed and sugar and honey are added and boiled. The boiled sugar water is poured through a sieve into a jar and cooled down to 50~60℃. Then dried persimmons are put into the jar and the jar is covered tight and left for 7~8 hours. The taste of the dried persimmons is well soaked out at this stage. When it is served sujonggwa is poured in to a large glass bowl with 3~5 dried persimmons inside and floating some pine nuts.

Sujonggwa with a peculiar flavor is fragrant, sweet and cool, and is good for preventing sepsis and overcoming fatigue.
