The Monument to the Great Victory in Pukgwan

The Monument to the Great Victory in Pukgwan (Pukgwandaechopbi) located in Rimmyong -ri, Kim Chaek City, North Hamgyong Province, DPR Korea was erected in 1708 in commemoration of the great victory of the Righteous Volunteers’ Army led by Jong Mun Bu who defeated and wiped out Japanese aggressors invaded into the Hamgyong Province during the Imjin Patriotic War.

“Pukgwan” means the area of the northern region of the country and “taechop” means the great victory.

The inscription on the monument notes in its preface that the significance of the battles of the Jong Mun Bu Volunteers’ Army can be said to be on a par with the naval battle in Hansan Islet,  the battles at Haengjusan Fort and Yonan Castle, and further explains about the organization of the Righteous Volunteers’ Army and its great battles. In the main text, it notes that the Japanese invaders were driven out because the righteous volunteers rose up and fought bravely, that the people could continue farming peacefully afterwards, and that the feats of the Volunteers’ Army shall be remembered for all ages.

The Monument to the Great Victory in Pukgwan is an invaluable historic relic for the study in the history of struggle of the Korean people against foreign invaders.
