Mt Kuwol
Mt Kuwol is one of the six famous mountains in Korea.
It is located at the boundaries of Anak, Unryul, Samchon and Unchon counties of South Hwanghae Province. It is the highest mountain in South Hwanghae Province, covering a large area of 110km².
It has various subtle sceneries of the towering vast peaks, cliffs, fantastic rocks, deep valleys covered with thick forest and clear streams flowing between them in harmony with waterfalls, pools, fords, thus being a distinguished mountain in Korea.
Mt Kuwol was variously named for its magnificence, beautiful scenery of four seasons and lots of legends related to Tangun, the founder of the Korean nation.
From olden times, Mt Kuwol has been called Asadal, Kummidal, Paekak mountain, Kwol mountain and Samwi mountain.
It has also been called Soak and Sojin mountain because it defended the west, Sonsan where spirits played and Phungak mountain because of her beautiful autumn tints.
In addition, the name of Kuwol mountain came from the legend that the maple leaves are beautiful, as well as saying that it consists of 99 peaks.
The beauty of the mountain is relevant to her special geological composition.
Long–standing weathering and erosion of the joint and crack surface have created cliffs and rocks, stone pillars with pyramid and cone, and deep valleys in Mt Kuwol, composed of granite, biotite granite, amphibole, etc.
Including Sahwang Peak (954m), the highest one, it has nameless big and small peaks such as O Peak, Sam Peak, Tangun Peak, Inhwang Peak and Asa Peak.
Mt Kuwol is relatively warm and there is much precipitation.
The annual average temperature is 10℃ and the annual precipitation is 862mm.
It was registered as the International Biosphere Sanctuary for her beauties of mountain, valley and scenery, and the rich ecological environment.
Today Mt Kuwol serves as a wonderful cultural recreation resort for our people.
