Jongrung Temple
Jongrung Temple situated in Ryongsan-ri, Ryokpho District in Pyongyang dates back to the days of Koguryo Dynasty.
The temple was built to pray for his souls in the early 5th century when the Mausoleum of King Tongmyong, the founder of Koguryo Dynasty, was removed here. The hill just behind the temple is thickly wooded with pine trees that are hundreds of years old, wherein the mausoleum is situated.
The temple was excavated in Juche 63 (1974) and its main quarter was restored in Juche 82 (1993).
As the architecture style of temple peculiar to Koguryo, it comprises Pogwang Hall, Ryonghwa Hall, Kuknak Hall with an octagonal seven-storeyed pagoda at the center, all of which are enclosed by a main gate and corridors. The framework, brackets and colorful painting of each building follow the contemporary architecture style based on the murals of Koguryo tombs.
Many artifacts such as cornerstones, ondol (hypocaust) system, tiles, bricks and earthenware discovered at the temple allow to hint the development of ceramics and craftwork, the life customs and the system of Buddhist temple of Koguryo Dynasty.
