Pobun Hermitage in Mt Ryongak

Pobun Hermitage, situated at the halfway of the south side of Mt Ryongak in Ryongbong-ri, Mangyongdae District, Pyongyang, was first built in 393 and renovated in the middle of the feudal Joson dynasty.

With the background of high steep cliff, several buildings such as Main Hall, Sansin Pavilion, Chilsong Pavilion, Toksong Pavilion are placed in conformity with the topographical conditions of the mountain.

The Main Hall, with 5 bays (10.27m) in front and 3 bays (6.2m) in side, has a gabled roof and 14 hullim columns (a column that top part is narrow and it goes thick to the bottom). The front side is 2 Ikgong bracket of exterior cross beam type with double eaves and the back side with a single eave, that is, hwaban (a board put on top of the first cornice on a pillar to hold the beam support) is only put on the front side while there aren’t any on the back. It is corbelled under the beam which made firm and good to see.

Chilsong Pavilion is a gabled roof building with 3 bays in front and a bay in side and the others are small in size with a single bay.

Pobun Hermitage is a precious national cultural heritage permeated with the intelligence and talents of our ancestors.
