Mt Kumgang
Mt Kumgang, located in the middle of the eastern coast of our country, is one of the six scenic spots covering large areas of Kosong County and Kumgang County, Kangwon Province.
Mt Kumgang is a picture of 12,000 peaks soaring into the sky, various kinds and shades of rocks, huge layers of rock cliffs and deep valleys, numerous ponds and pools, waterfalls falling like beads, diverse flora and fauna and thick foliage in a wide area of 530 ㎢. Mt. Kumgang is a collection of scenic beauties, not a mere scenic beauty, as it is equipped with mountain beauty, valley beauty, plateau scenery, landscape view, lake scenery, sea and coastal scenery.
Mt Kumgang is the diverse in natural beauty and has unique landscape from region to region, which is divided into Outer Kumgang, Inner Kumgang and Sea Kumgang and again into dozens of districts and dongs (sections, peaks).
From olden times, Mt Kumgang has been called Kumgang mountain in spring when all flowers are in full bloom and Pongnae mountain in summer because of the white clouds circle around the cliffs, thick green foliage, all sorts of beautiful birdcalls and loud sound of waterfall. It has also been called Phungak mountain in autumn because of its glowing red leaves and blue streams and Kaegol mountain in winter because it is windy and the whole mountain is covered with white snow and ice to form a peculiar scenery.
The diverse scenery of Mt Kumgang is closely relevant to her geological and topographical conditions and the distribution of fauna and flora. Long-standing earth movements, weathering, erosion and abrasion, etc. have created such subtle scenery as cliffs, deep valleys, myriad shaped peaks, stone pillars with the shape of board, pyramid and square, and the fantastic rocks.
Mt. Kumgang has numerous peaks including Piro Peak, Yongrang Peak, Chail Peak, Paekma Peak and Ilchul Peak. That is why Mt. Kumgang is called "twelve thousand peaks".
Mt. Kumgang is relatively warm and is one of the regions of heavy rain and snow.
In the area of Mt. Kumgang, the temperature difference is severe according to the height of the mountain, which decreases by about 1°C as it rises by 100 meters in summer and 80 to 90 meters in winter.
Mt Kumgang has many plants and peculiar specialty plants of different temperate zones because of the nature of natural geographical conditions. Rare plants such as Pentactina rupicola and Kumkangsania asiatica are preserved as natural monuments.
Numerous mountain animals, fishes and birds living in Mt Kumgang also add beauty to nature.
Kumgang Phoxinus and Outer Kumgang tortoise is preserved and breed as natural monuments.
Today Mt. Kumgang has been built into a cultural recreation resort and tourist resort and turned into a world scenic spot enjoying not only our people but also overseas compatriots and world people.
