Kaesim Temple
Kaesim Temple is situated in Kaesimdae of Mt Chilbo, Pochon-ri, Myongchon County in North Hamgyong Province.
It was first built in 826 in the period of Palhae, renovated in 1377 and it has been repaired several times thereafter. The present Taeung Hall was rebuilt in 1784 and made a major repair in 1853.
Kaesim Temple consists of Taeung Hall at centre, Manse Pavilion, Simgom Hall, Unghyang Pavilion, Kwanum Hall, Sansin Pavilion.
Taehung Hall is of 3 bays (10.71m) at the front and 2 bays (6.6m) at the side with a hip-saddle roof. It is supported by entasis columns on the high stylobate and four corner columns are made to lean slightly to the inside and little thicker and higher than other columns. This is one of the old architectural methods that strengthen the intensity of building and adjust visual trick that columns can be seen buldged outside. The ridges and eaves all form a smooth and beautiful contour and the look of the hip-saddle roof with raising 4 edges looks refreshing.
Simkom Hall is a big building of 6 bays (16.9m) at the front and 3 bays (8.8m) at the side. The hip-saddle roof of single eaves is well suited to the surrounding natural environment with the Taehung Hall.
The roof of Kwanum Hall and Sansin Pavilion are rectangle pole and the one of Umhyang Pavilion is hipped roof. It was unique to use the rectangle pole roof or hipped roof in the construction of the temple not using the gabled roof.
The Kaesim Temple filled with our people’s surperior talent and wisdom is widely used as people’s cultural recreation who visit Mt Chilbo.
