Mt Chilbo, scenic beauty in Korea

Mt Chilbo is located in the southern part of the eastern coast of North Hamgyong Province.

From olden times, Mt Chilbo, widely known as Kwanbuk Kumgang (Kumgang in North Hamgyong Province), is a pride of our nation for its beautiful and distinctive natural scenery as well as its long history and culture.

Mt Chilbo is located in four counties around Myongchon County and has an area of about 250㎢. Mt Chilbo rises majestically in the blue-wave waters of the sea and in the form of the rocks between Orang River and Hwadae River.

As for its beautiful and unique natural scenery of Mt Chilbo and diversity of flora and fauna, our ancestors regarded this mountain as a scenic spot in Kwanbuk area from long ago and named Chilbo which means seven treasures.

Also, the scenery of Mt Chilbo, which changes beautifully in the seasons, was called Kkottongsan (flower garden) in spring where all kinds of flowers are in full bloom and Rokumsan (thick-wooded mountain) in summer because it was covered with green foliage. And the scenery of Mt. Chilbo was called Honghwasan (fire mountain) in autumn because it was glowing with reddening maples and Solpaeksan (white snow mountain) in winter because it was likely that the whole mountain was burning with white snow and sprinkling silver beads.

Mt Chilbo contains many legends related with our people’s wisdom and talent, aspiration and desire, lofty morals and customs as well as many classical literatures, pictures, folk songs and dances about it.

Mt Chilbo has peaks in and around 1 000 meters above sea level including Pakdal Pass, Chontok Peak, Samgak Peak, Hamae Peak, Kkachi Peak and Hyangro Peak centered on the Sangmae Peak.

In addition, many hot springs such as Hwangjin Spa, Pokchon Spa and Manho Spa have long been widely known in Mt Chilbo, which serve as pleasant cultural resorts for the people.
