Jongyang Temple

   Jongyang Temple is situated in Kumgang County, Kangwon Province.

   It was named Jongyang Temple as it was built on the sunniest place in the scenic Mt Kumgang.

   It was first established in 600 and renovated in 661.

   There are Panya Hall, Yaksa Hall, three-storeyed stone pagoda and hexagonal stone lantern in the temple.

   The Panya Hall, as a main building of the temple, is of 3 bays (11.13m) at the front and 3 bays (8.74m) at the side with a hip-saddle roof of double eaves. It is supported by entasis columns on the well-trimmed cornerstones placed on the platform.

   The Yaksa Hall, which was reconstructed between the late 18th century and the early 19th century, is an unusal building of hexagonal plane with no beams inside.

   Inside the hall there is a seated Bhaisajyaguru Buddha of which is 1.67m high and is made of granite.

   The three-storeyed stone pagoda in front of the Yaksa Hall is called as one of the “3 famous pagodas in Mt Kumgang” along with the three-storeyed pagodas of Jangyon Temple and Singye Temple.

   With the total height of 3.97m, it is well-balanced with beautiful shape and it provides precious data in the study of its structure and the course of changes.

   The stone lantern in the temple, which was built in the period of Koryo, is placed in front of the three-storeyed stone pagoda.

   This lantern, made of granite, consists of four parts: pedestal, pillar, light-box and head. The total height now remaining is 2.95m.

   The Jongyang Temple is one of the old architecture in Korea and is a valuable historic site showing the high architectural skills of the times.
