Mt Paektu, the ancestral mountain

Mt Paektu is the highest mountain in our country that rises in the north of Samjiyon City, Ryanggang Province.

From ancient times, our ancestors regarded all the mountains of the country had stretched down from Mt Paektu, defining the Great Paektu Mountains as a main mountain range. They also regarded Mt Paektu as the dignity of the nation, spirit of Korea and birthplace of the sagacious, brave and pure nation’s soul.

On top of the mountain, peaks with a steep incline of over 60 degrees surround Lake Chon like a screen and as many as twenty of them are over 2 500m above the sea level.

Mt Paektu, with its typical alpine climate, is the coldest and has extreme changes in climate.

It forms a distinctive fauna and flora which is adapted to its proper geological and geographical condition and brutal climate.

There are many animals that need special protection for its small number and rarity, including sables, otters, tigers, musk deers, deers, antelopes and brown bears.

About 2 700 species of plants are distributed and among them Abies nephrolepis, spruce, Picea Koraiensis, Korea larch and Siberian larch hold major proportion.

In July and August, white, yellow, incarnadine and purple flowers are in full bloom to decorate the base of Mt Paektu, and rhododendron, an indigenous plant of it, is very impressive because it blooms beautifully with its fragrance even in snow.

Today Mt Paektu, the ancestral mountain associated with the spirit of the nation, shines as a sublime mountain of revolution and a symbol of victory.
