“Chonsang Ryolcha Bunyajido”
“Chonsang Ryolcha Bunyajido” (an astronomical chart) is a small revised reproduction of the Sokgak Chonmundo (a constellation chart carved on a stone) of Koguryo Dynasty.
Sokgak Chonmundo that had been made between the late 5th century and the early 6th century during the days of Koguryo Dynasty was lost afterwards. But its rubbing was discovered in the early days of the feudal Joson dynasty.
Based on its rubbing, several copies of an astronomical chart were made in 1395 which was named “Chonsang Ryolcha Bunyajido”.
In the chart, 1467 stars are marked in 282 constellations. And the equator line, arctic line, ecliptic line and longitude lines are indicated and the Galaxy also drawn.
With its preciseness and richness in content, “Chonsang Ryolcha Bunyajido” was widely known to the world from the early times and is regarded as one of the precious cultural heritage that shows the development of Korean astronomy of medieval times.
