Newly registered natural monument – Ogasan wilderness area

   Recently, Ogasan wilderness area was newly registered as a natural monument.

   Ogasan wilderness area is situated at the boundary of Hwaphyong County, Jagang Province and Kim Hyong Jik County, Ryanggang Province and it is one of our national treasures.

   Ogasan wilderness area has a long history of formation, and a lot of rare animals and plants grow in this natural primeval forest.

   “Ogasan” means 5 beautiful mountains which indicates the ones in the primeval forest that are over 1 000m above sea level.

   Ogasan wilderness area belongs to the end of mountain range that extends from Rangrim mountain range to the north and it is at the boundary of boreal and temperate plant distribution area thus characterizes a variety of plant species.

   Ogasan wilderness area is situated between 720m to 1 230m above sea level.

   It is composed of coniferous tree forest, mixed forest, broadleaf tree forest according to the height of the mountain.

   Ogasan wilderness area also has a dateless natural primeval forest. The 100 year old yew tree, 700 year old Mongolian oak, over 500 year old pine nut tree and linden and other lots of hundreds of years old trees grow in the wilderness area.

   Since the Ogasan wilderness area holds a thick forest and has diverse physiographical conditions, it offers a favorable environment for animals.

   130 species of animals live here and they are superior in number than other areas.

   As mentioned above, with its long history of formation and ampleness of peculiarbiological resources, Ogasan wilderness area is of great significance in research and diffusion of scientific knowledge.

   Previously, 800 jongbo of the area where the primeval forest was concentrated in was registered as “Ogasan primeval forest”, but now the whole area that covers 6 500 jongbo is newly registered as a natural monument.

   This measure is a vivid proof of our party’s nature preservation policy to actively increase the animals and plants resources and hand over the beautiful mountains and rivers to our next generation.
