Koryo Songgyungwan University, proud of its long history

Koryo Songgyungwan University was first established in A.D 992.

Koryo feudal dynasty had built a supreme educational organ in its capital, Kaesong, whose original name was Kukjagam.

Later, Kukjagam`s name varied to Songgyungam and Songgyungwan.

When it was established, subjects including Kukjahak (Confucian metaphysics for the descendants of 2nd or 3rd class civil and military), Thaehak (Confucian metaphysics for the descendants of 5th class civil and military), Samunhak (Confucian metaphysics for the descendants of 7th class civil and military), Sohak (writing subject for the descendants of 8th class civil and military) and Sanhak (arithmetic subject for the descendants of 8th class civil and military) were taught to the students.

The student enrollment was about 200.

Koryo Songgyungwan University is considered to be one of the oldest universities in the world as it was established earlier than the Paris University in France or the Oxford University in Great Britain which has a long history in the world.

The building of Songgyungwan in the period of Koryo was first built in 1047 as a royal villa, Taemyonggung, but used as a university building since Kugjagam in 1087 moved here.

The original building was burned down by the Japanese during the Imjin Patriotic War and the present building was rebuilt from 1602 to 1610 at the original place.
