Newly-made Kimchi pit

In July Juche 66 (1977), the great leader Comrade Kim Il Sung visited a house in Yaksu-ri, Changsong County, North Phyongan Province, and kindly asked the housewife if she liked her new house.

Listening to her answering that it was really nice, he stepped inside the kitchen and turned on the water tap to see the water supply, and also he asked what kind of fuel was used in the house.

After looking into all the rooms, the great leader came outside and looked at a Kimchi pot for a while standing upside-down at the corner of the yard.

It was an empty pot which was normally put upset outside of the house in summer.

In a deep thought for a while, the great leader said to the officials accompanied that Kimchi pits should be built in the houses.

It was a traditional custom for Korean people to make Kimchi pits in the houses and use the pits efficiently.

Kimchi pits were usually made at the corner near the kitchen of the front or back yard.

The style of the pit and its making method were varied according to the localities.

Thanks to benevolent measures of the great leader, lots of materials needed for making Kimchi pits were supplied to the village after his visit and fine Kimchi pits appeared at all the houses that had been newly moved into.
