Celebrated Mountain of Korea
Mt Kumgang
Mt Kumgang covers a large area of 530 square kilometres in Kosong, Kumgang and Thongchon counties of Kangwon Province, extending 60km north and south and 40km east and west.
The view of the mountain with its 12 000 soaring peaks looks like a picture scroll disclosing a wonderful harmony of myriad scenes and shapes–mysterious rocks, overhanging cliffs, ravines varied in depth with many pools and ponds, crystal-clear streams rushing down and round the cliffs and rocks, numerous waterfalls sending up rainbow-haunted spray, and a wide variety of fauna and flora.
It is a compound of all descriptions of natural beauties--mountain peaks, ravines, plateaus, distant views, lakes, seas and coasts.
Outer Kumgang
Outer Kumgang encompasses a series of peaks extending south and north, which are centred on Piro Peak, the principal peak of Mt Kumgang, and the east coastal area leading to Sea Kumgang.
Myriads of steep peaks such as the chain of peaks in Mt Kwanum, Ongnyo, Sejon and Chaeha, fantastic rocks, beautiful valleys including Kuryongyon and Hanha, waterfalls and pools of varying sizes blend together to accentuate this section’s scenery.
Inner Kumgang
Inner Kumgang is a scenic spot area west of Mt Kumgang.
It adjoins Outer Kumgang with Piro, the principal peak of Mt Kumgang, and a series of peaks including Ongnyo and Sangdung peaks and Onjong Pass northward and Wolchul and Ilchul peaks southward as boundaries.
It is famous for its deep, quiet and beautiful valleys which blend in well with many waterfalls and ponds thick with green foliage and mysteriously-shaped cliffs.
Sea Kumgang
Sea Kumgang is a scenic spot on the east coast in the eastern part of Kosong County of Kangwon Province.
It covers an area of seashore between Lagoon Samil and the East Sea of Korea, Hwajinpho through Taebong Island in the estuary of the Nam River from Suwon Headland in front of Haegumgang-ri.
It has such famous spots as Lagoon Samil, Janggun Pavilion, Ryonhwa Pavilion, Pongnae Pavilion, site of Tongchon Rock, Kuson Peak, Hyonjong Rock, Kumgang Gate, menhir, Sagong Rock and Chottae Rock. Covering a vast area and associated with many legendary tales, it boasts about its beauties of peaks, blue seawater and seashore, lakes and cliffs.
Pyol Kumgang
The area of Pyol Kumgang comprises beautiful places around Sonchang Stream (Juhom Stream) which starts from the valley connected with the ridges of Pyol Kumgang (Kumgang Pond) and Mts Obong and Sonchang (1 226m).
What is noteworthy in the area is that it unfolds a beautiful scenery although cliffs are low and waterfalls and pools are not high and big, compared with those in other areas.
