Fried glutinous rice cake with flowers was one which our people ate on the third day of the lunar March.
When the lunar March comes, the sky is clear without a speck of cloud and the mountains and fields are covered with the sprouts of the beautiful plants.
People call the lunar March the good month.
To enjoy the fragrance of spring to the full, our people appointed the third of lunar March as the holiday and took a full rest this day with the farming ahead.
The third of the lunar March was also called “SangSa" meaning ‘holiday of stepping on the grass in spring’ according to the historical records.
This day our people played the flower game.
From the old time, our people organized the picnic with the family members, neighboring persons and women this day when the number “3”is repeated 3 times.
They spent this day enjoyfully while eating the special foods such as the flower shaped cake.
This day’s picnic was called the flower game since the people spent the day while seeing the flowers or eating the flower shaped cake.
This game was the folk one which had been enjoyed since the period of three countries.
According to a historical record, family members gave a feast in the brook- side in the southern part of the valley called Zaemaegok on the third of the lunar March and this is the first record of the flower game.
This day when all kinds of flowers began to bloom, the women sightsaw the flowers, mountains and rivers and ate the flower shaped cake, sang songs and read the poems.
This was the occasion of showing the musical ability of women.
Thinking that their hair would get attractive and greasy if they washed their hair this day, the women washed their hair in the brook side.
Our people created the following folk song:
“We put the iron pot on the suppot stones
 Fried the dough and flower in sesame oil.
It tastes new and delicious.
This year will have bumper crop.”
 Our people mainly made the fried glutinous rice cake with azalea.
This was good to see and fragrant in taste and so this was put on the big table including the wedding table.
The food for the flower game was ones called “Sumyon” and “Hwamyon”. Sumyon was made by applying the mushy dough of mung beans starch to the petal of azalea and boiling it quickly and putting it into the honey water with the red color.
Hwamyon was made by cutting the mung bean dough thinly like a strip of noodle and putting it into the mixture of honey and omija juice and adding pine nuts seeds.
“Sumyon” and “Hwamyon” were the necessary drinks in spring.
