The 24 seasonal divisions and folklore customs of July
In our country, July is the hottest period of summer with a lot of rain. In July we have soso (the beginning of the summer heat) and taeso (the height of summer).
This year soso falls on 7th and taeso falls on 22nd.
As the crops are normally flourishing in soso period, our ancestors put efforts in weeding the rice paddy and fields several times.
They prepared compost for next year before and after taeso period. The piles of rotten grass became good quality of organic fertilizer next year.
In the sizzling summer, our people used to make various kinds of foods that protect them from the sultriness of the season.
Normally it is hottest in the beginning of the dog days and the middle of dog days in July.
In these periods people enjoy foods like tangogi (dog meat) soup, chogetang (vinegared chicken and beef soup), rice and red-bean porridge, boiled rice with assorted mixtures and etc.
Tangogi soup, in particular, is a typical traditional food which our people enjoyed most in summer days.
Since the soup is known to be good for health, even a drop of it, our people used to enjoy it along with boiled rice with millet and worked up a sweat.
Tangogi soup is widely known as “a soup for building up health” which helps you to improve your appetite and supply nutrition to your body.
Chogetang and rice and red-bean porridge are also excellent traditional foods that are good for health.
