Natural Monument: Ginkgo Tree at Jasan

A ginkgo tree grows behind the building of Jasan Senior Middle School, about two kilometres east of Jasan Railway Station, in Jasan-ri, Phyongsong City, South Phyongan Province.

Recorded to be planted around the year of 1280, it is a female ginkgo tree magnificent both in height, as well as in the width of crown, both of which are similar in proportion.

It is 26 metres tall, 6.8 metres round at root collar, 5.5 metres round at chest height and 23 metres wide at crown.

Its trunk has a greyish brown colour.

The leaves measure about 3-4 cm in length and 5-6 cm in width, and, compared to different ginkgo tree leaves, are small. Distinctive feature is that, at contrast to different gingko tree leaves which are fan-shaped or flabellate with two-forked tips, its leaves have no forked tips.

The Ginkgo Tree at Jasan as old of hundreds of years is an invaluable natural monument in terms of scientific and academic significance.
