Natural Monument: Chongdo Sea Cave

The cave is located in a hilly area at the seashore of Hongwon County.

Composed of granitic cataclasite, the area was a coastal islet where the process of marine erosion formed the cave.

Later, undergoing gradual uplift, the cave became larger and connected with the land by deposit of sand carried by river and sea.

The cave has a shape of half-moon with vertical sides in the front and at the back.

Being an open cave with a length of 10 metres, about 20m2 of its floor is submerged. It is 12 metres high and 9 metres wide at the point where the floor of the cave is on a level with the sea.

The Chongdo Sea Cave is of scientific significance offering clear and detailed observation of the various natural processes of crustal oscillation, marine change, erosion and sedimentation. At the same time, it carries another beautiful feature of the coastal sceneries.
