Natural Monument: Makttae Rock
Makttae Rock lies about 700m away towards Pangung-ri from the seat of Namap-ri in Yomju County.
A low hill is in the east and a vast rice field in the west, and several kilometres further on is the West Sea of Korea.
It is a mysterious monolith which was formed as its surrounding rocks disappeared and their interior red felsite dike appeared by the erosion of the sea and weathering through the long geological age.
It is 10 metres high and 16 metres round at the bottom.
Apparently, it seems to fall down, but it is very safe for its good balance. It has many cracks.
It has been well known from olden times as it is easily seen from kilometres away.
It is a natural monument of great significance in studying the weathering process of red felsite and the erosion of the sea and coastal deposition.
