Jongum Gate

Jongum Gate is located on Moran Hill in the capital city of Pyongyang.

It was the south gate in the northern part of the walled city of Pyongyang during the period of Koguryo. Built in the mid-6th century, it was repaired and rebuilt several times.

The present gate pavilion was rebuilt in 1714. It was burnt down by the bombings during the Fatherland Liberation War (1950-1953) and restored in 1959.

There is a beautiful and stout arch on the well-trimmed granite embankment. Huge stones were piled in seven tiers vertically on both sides, on which the arch was formed with 15 keystones.

The archway is about 3m wide, 3.4m high and 6.35 m long. On the embankment is the gate pavilion with three bays (7.36m) on the facade and two bays (4.35m) at the side.

The gate is a valuable cultural relic showing the outstanding architecture and patriotic spirit of the ancestors who fought bravely against foreign aggressors.
