To Meet the Tastes of All Family Members

The following happened in October 1979 when the construction of Changgwang Street was launched.

Chairman Kim Jong Il gave detailed instructions regarding the project, ranging from the layouts of the street to the styles of apartment buildings and the number of their floors. He said: From olden times our people have fine customs of respecting the elderly and remaining faithful to their filial obligations.  In order to encourage them to carry forward such good traits it is necessary to lay out rooms separately for parents, husband and wife, and their children. All rooms should be large so as to give refreshing and unique feelings.

It would be advisable to introduce a hot-water heating system into all rooms, with the heating pipes laid closely in the lower part of the floor and gradually wide in the upper part. Then, all members of a family can sleep at places appropriate to their likings; a grandmother or a nursing mother, who is fond of warm place, at the lower part, and a person, who likes cool place, at the upper part.

According to his instruction, multi-storeyed apartment houses were built in Changgwang Street, each flat of which had three to four rooms exclusively for parents, husband and wife, and their children. This set a precedent for construction of other streets later.
