Nine-Storeyed Pagoda at Anguk Temple

Among the precious cultural heritage created by the Korean ancestors is a nine-storeyed pagoda at Anguk Temple. The granite pagoda built in the period of Koryo is located in Ponghak-dong of Phyongsong City.

Its ground plane is a regular square.

The pagoda with a height of 6.23 metres consists of pedestals, body and top. The lower pedestal is engraved with two lotus designs on each side, the lower part of which is decorated with a bracken leaf at the centre.

The upper pedestal is much higher than the lower one.

The roof stones are relatively high and the eaves are carved straight in the middle part, both sides of which are raised slightly. The edges of angle rafters have the traces of hanging wind bells.

The top is crowned with a round stone.

As the pagoda does not taper very much, it gives an impression that it rises upward for its high pedestals and body and roof stones.
