Mausoleum of King Tongmyong
The Mausoleum of King Tongmyong, founder of Koguryo, is located in Ryongsan-ri, Ryokpho District, Pyongyang.
The tomb had originally been located in Jolbon, the first capital of Koguryo, where King Tongmyong acted and died. It was moved to the present site when the capital was moved to Pyongyang in 427 according to our ancestors’ custom of moving the tomb of the founding father together when moving the capital.
The present mausoleum was rebuilt in May 1993.
Covering an area of over 220 hectares, it is divided into the sections of the tomb and Jongnung Temple.
The mausoleum is surrounded by over 30 stone sculptures, 15 Koguryo tombs, the gate to it and a shrine.
The Jongnung Temple is the place where memorial services for the king were held.
It was restored to its original state in 1993 when the mausoleum was rebuilt.
The temple has an octagonal seven-storeyed pagoda in the centre, Pogwang Hall in the north, Ryonghwa Hall in the east, Kungnak Hall in the west and an inner gate to the temple in the south.
A pond, a wide open space and armful-thick pine forests are seen around the mausoleum.
