13-storeyed Octagonal Pagoda in Pohyon Temple
The 13-storeyed octagonal pagoda was built in Pohyon Temple of Mt Myohyang in the closing years of the Koryo dynasty.
It preserves the features of Koryo’s pagoda style in the closing years of the dynasty in terms of its form and decoration.
The pedestal harmonizes well with the body.
The body tapers off from the bottom upward, giving a stable look. The corners of the body are embossed with thin square pillars and the sides are framed to look cosy. The eaves of the roof stones are raised with their lower and upper lines curving up in parallel with each other. Wind bells hang on each tip of the eaves.
The pagoda was built with well-trimmed pieces of granite.
It is a valuable cultural heritage which shows the advanced stone architecture of Korea in the middle ages.
