Zelkova Trees at Kwangmyong, Natural Monuments
More than ten zelkova trees at Kwangmyong, which are natural monuments, grow around the Jogye Gate at Sokwang Temple, 20 kilometers north of the town of Kosan County, Kangwon Province.
It is told they were planted in 1386 when Sokwang Temple was built.
The largest tree is 27m tall, 9.8m round at root neck, 8m round at chest height and 25m wide at crown, while the smallest one about 12m tall, 2.4m round at root neck, 2.3m round at chest height and 8m wide at crown.
The zelkova trees, very big and old as well as significant in scientific study and education, have been registered as natural monuments to add beauty to the scenery of the temple.
