Hyonmu Gate
Hyonmu Gate on Moran Hill, a pride of Pyongyang, is a precious historic site representing the type of a castle gate peculiar to Koguryo.
Its name is derived from that of the ancient God of North, thus indicating a north gate.
It was built as a northern gate of the North Castle which was a component of the Walled City of Pyongyang, the capital of Koguryo.
It was first constructed in the mid-6th century, repaired several times during the Koryo period, and finally rebuilt in 1714.
The gate consists of a platform which is an extension of the wall and a gate pavilion built on it.
The platform was built by piling up stones trimmed in the shape of quadrangular pyramid just like the wall construction in the way that vertical joints of stones were not aligned. The archway was made in the middle of the platform.
Hyonmu Gate is a valuable cultural heritage to show the ardent patriotism and high level of fortification technique of our ancestors.
