Glutinous Corn Pancake

Pancake is one of the folk dishes enjoyed by our people.

There are tens of its kind according to the ingredients such as glutinous rice, mung bean, sorghum, corn, pea and flour. They used to be a special dish in ordinary days and a festival dish on holidays.

One evening in early September Juche 49(1960), President Kim Il Sung gave a phone call to the officials of the Pyongyang City People’s Committee who sat together in a room for discussion of the next day work and told them to wait for a while, not breaking up the meeting.

After a while, an official sent by the President entered the room carrying a package wrapped in white paper, in which appetizing pancake was inside.

The official said that the President had sent the pancake for the officials to have a taste of it.

The pancake was very delicious, looking sticky and much tasty unlike the ordinary pancakes.

Shortly afterwards, the President phoned them again and asked if they had tasted it and what kind of pancake they thought it was.

Heard their answers, the President said that they were all wrong. He continued that the pancake was made of glutinous corn, the first product of the season sent by the farmers few days ago, and because it was very tasty, he sent them to the officials in order to produce savory pancakes more for people.

Like this, thanks to the benevolent measure of the President, glutinous corn pancake has become a popular folk dish to be widely enjoyed by our people.
