Simwon Temple in Pakchon

   The temple is situated at the foot of Mt Pongrin, about 5km away east of Pakchon County, North Phyongan Province.

   According to the inscription, the temple was built by Hyonukguksa (786-868), so it is presumed to be first built in 9th century. The inscription also says that the pre-existing buildings were renovated in 1368.

   At present, there are Pogwang Hall, the main building, Chongphung Pavilion, Hyangro Pavilion, the inscription for renovation of Pongrinsan Simwon Temple and stupas.

   Pogwang Hall is a single storied house of gabled roof with 3 bays (10.85m) in front and 2 bays (7.2m) in side which is supported by entasis columns.

   Color paintings inside Pogwang Hall have been preserved as it were for hundreds of years, showing the art of color painting of Korean people were very good.

   As Pogwang Hall, the oldest central building, shows a number of Koryo architectural styles it is regarded as the precious legacy for studying the architecture of Koryo.
