Habitat of brown bear at Ryongnim
The area in Ryongnim and Rangnim counties, Jagang Province which is 1 400m above sea level including Wagal Peak (2 260m), the highest peak at the Rangnim range, Mt Kosokgol(1 870m) and Mt Pakdal(1 816m) becomes the brown bears` habitat.
Kanbuk Stream and Fuji Stream which are tributaries to the Jangja River flow down the steep incline to the west and southwest of Wagal Peak. Tributaries to the Jangjin River flow down the gradual descent to the east.
This area is mostly a coniferous forest such as larch, fir, pine nut tree, Abies nephrolepis and spruce, and is mixed with broad leaved tree like oak, black walnut tree, birch and aspen.
The zone which is above the forest limit (1 800~1 900m) is covered with boreal vegetation and subshrubs.
Lots of animals like boar, fox, yellow-throated marten, weasel, squirrel and badger as well as the grass-eating animals like goral, musk deer and roe deer inhabit the area.
This area which is thickly wooded and abundant in food sources becomes one of the typical regions to see the range of the brown bears in our country.
