Fossils of a Bird of the Mesozoic Age Unearthed in the Area of Paektho-dong in Sinuiju

Recently, fossils of a bird of the Mesozoic age were unearthed in the area of Paektho-dong, Sinuiju.

In the course of intensifying investigation and research into the newly established Paektho-dong fossil reserve, the paleontological research team of Kim Il Sung University unearthed the fossils of the head and toe bones, 11 primary flight feathers and small flight feathers in the third layer of the Sinuiju formation (about 130 million years old) that belongs to a Cretaceous layer of the Mesozoic age.

The researchers scientifically proved that it was a bird adapted to flying in view of its formative and structural features of the flight feathers.

Also discovered were the fossils of a dinosaur tooth, primitive mammals and fishes.

A national sci-tech deliberation evaluated that the paleontological research findings in the Paektho-dong were a great research achievement of academic value in deepening the research into the Cretaceous biocoenosis of the Mesozoic era in our country.

The bird was named Paektho bird and will be put on display at the Natural History Museum in Mt. Taesong.
